Special lamp
GIRM 316 refers to a special lamp with the function of indicating the real presence. It cites the corresponding Canon in the CIC (Canon 940) as well as the paragraphs in the Ritual and the Instruction of the Sacred Congregation for Rites as its reference.
The purpose of the sanctuary lamp is simple enough. I’m struck with how little known it is by the people. Giving the explanation for how and why the candle is lit is a great and easy chance to teach them about the reality of the Real Presence.
I’ve been meaning to switch to 100% Beeswax for the Sanctuary Lamp. Just to honor Him with the best. Otherwise, what? 51% because it’s cheaper? Sounds cheaper to me. Is that what we’re going for, though? The citation from the Ritual expressly concludes “According to the traditional custom used as a sign of honor for the Lord” (my translation). I like the idea of expressly reaffirming the tradition wherever we can, especially for the sake of honoring the Lord.
Before we get to the final paragraph, GIRM 317, it’s worth noting that so far, the GIRM, concerning the Reservation of the MBS has mentioned primarily its construction, location, fittingness to be blessed and its need to be honored.
